Begin with an energy audit
A successful electrical upgrade starts with measured demand. Refrigeration, watermaking, navigation electronics, communications, cooking, air conditioning, and hotel loads have different duty cycles. Estimate daily consumption in realistic conditions, then include reserve capacity for poor weather and changing habits.
Solar capacity is limited by usable area, shading, panel temperature, and installation geometry. A large nominal array can underperform if sails, booms, antennas, or deck structures repeatedly shade key sections. System design should consider real-world production rather than nameplate wattage alone.
Treat batteries as part of a complete system
Lithium batteries can provide high usable capacity and efficient charging, but they require compatible charging sources, protection, monitoring, cabling, fusing, ventilation planning, and an installation that follows current marine standards. Alternator output and temperature management deserve particular attention.
The best system is understandable and serviceable. Clear labeling, accessible protection devices, accurate monitoring, documented settings, and a practical backup plan are more valuable offshore than an impressive component list that only one technician can troubleshoot.
