Choose independent specialists
A pre-purchase survey is most valuable when the buyer selects an independent surveyor with direct multihull experience. Depending on the yacht, separate engine and rigging inspections may also be appropriate. Confirm the scope in writing, including haul-out, systems testing, moisture inspection, and a sea trial.
Provide the surveyor with the listing, equipment inventory, maintenance history, and any questions raised during your viewing. A well-prepared inspection focuses time on condition and risk rather than searching for basic documentation.
Use the report to understand priorities
Survey findings should distinguish safety issues, deferred maintenance, normal wear, cosmetic observations, and optional improvements. Ask for context around estimated urgency and the access required to complete each repair. The most important result is a realistic picture of the yacht's condition and near-term needs.
After the report, combine repair estimates with insurance requirements, registration or documentation needs, and planned upgrades. This gives you a clearer acquisition budget and a grounded basis for any contract decisions made with your broker and advisers.
